It’s a fact: no other country does baked goods like France. From the humble yet mighty baguette tradition to the towering peaks of a tarte au citron meringuée, you’ll find some of Paris's most celebrated flavours not in restaurants but in boulangeries and pâtisseries.

Pair your freshly-purchased baked good with a silky latte and you’ve got yourself the ultimate pick-me-up. From dawn to dusk, Paris’s coffee shops thrum with energy and ambience. From art students discussing projects to fashion models taking a break from a shoot, these shops play host to a myriad of players on the city’s creative stage.

If the sheer amount of choice out there seems overwhelming to you, don’t fear! We’ve put together a list of our favourite cafés and boulangeries in Paris’s 8th arrondissement to help guide you on your way. Our top recommendation is to take your baked goods and coffee to go and find a quiet spot to enjoy them in the gorgeous Parc Monceau.

Boulangeries & pâtisseries

Odette is certainly one of those places that locals will queue for. Here, they focus on one thing and one thing only: choux. And, by gosh, do they do it well. For those who don’t know, choux are little pastry balls similar to profiteroles, filled with a myriad of different flavours.

Odette does all the classics (vanilla, hazelnut, lemon… you name it!) as well as some more creative options. Be sure to try the flavour of the month - you won’t be disappointed.

Le BAB, Bar à Brioches, is another such specialist, devoting all their energy to focus on (yes, you guessed it) brioche and babka.

From sticky pink praline to crunchy pistachio, all their flavours are wonderful, and their sandwiches are a top option if you’re searching for a quick but delicious lunch stop.

If you have a dessert connoisseur in the group, then a trip to Cédric Grolet Opera has to be on the cards. Here you will come across renowned chef Cédric Grolet’s fleurs, amongst the world’s most iconic desserts.

You can either take these edible works of art away to enjoy back at your apartment or tuck into an exquisite afternoon tea in the elegant salon de thé.

A final stop for the sweet tooths has to be Pierre Hermé. This is the place to try one of France’s most celebrated sweet treats: the classic macaron.

Hermé has elevated these bite-sized pastries to a form of art. Somehow crunchy, crumbly, chewy, goey and soft all at once, each macaron conjures up an explosion of texture and flavour as it melts in your mouth.

Coffee

From bustling café terraces to cool coffee bars, Paris runs on espresso, and the 8th arrondissement is no different. You’ll find an amazing selection of independent coffee shops right on the doorstep of The Élysée Collection, so there are plenty of options when it comes to that morning latte.

One of our favourite local coffee spots has to be Noir; they have two shops in the 8th, and both serve perfectly balanced roasts in beautiful ceramic cups. Enjoy your coffee in the shop, out on the little terrace or take it away on a stroll through the neighbourhood.

Design lovers will adore Café Fino. A vision of undulating vanilla curves and creatively placed ceiling mirrors, this is one of the most beautiful cafés around.

Not just a pretty face, they also serve a selection of excellent coffee, as well as some great brunch and cake options.

If you’re craving something a little different from the usual coffee order, say an iced matcha, a fresh juice or a steaming cup of chai, then Shiba Café is the place to go.

They have an extensive menu of hot and cold drinks, and a team of expert baristas behind the counter ready to craft whatever takes your fancy.

Incredibly stylish, Café Nuances is the place to see and be seen. A cacophony of coloured glass, patterned floor tiles and glossy marble walls, the interiors somehow come together in the chicest of clashes.

The menu boasts the usual espresso-based suspects, as well as an array of more creative flavour combos. If you’re up for trying something new, then the iced rose matcha latte is both refreshing and delicious.
