Seeking to travel slowly, authentically and intentionally, Alyson has always been drawn to the unique design and exclusive location of each onefinestay home. When she told us she was planning a trip to Paris with her family, we knew the perfect spot for them right away. Located in one of the city's most iconic neighbourhoods, just opposite the Presidential Palace, Élysée Collection II is a haven of peace and calm amidst the bustle of the city.
Here Alyson tells us about her trip, shares a few of her favourite spots in the home and some insider tips for anyone planning a family trip to France's capital.
This summer was a season of change and possibility for our family. After selling our home in early summer, we felt called to stretch our roots a little and spend a month abroad, traveling slowly and with intention. My husband, our two children, and I centered our trip around reconnecting with family and friends in both Paris and Italy, two places that have become close to our hearts.
In Northern Italy, our children had the rare gift of attending a summer camp with their former kindergarten teacher, which brought so much joy and continuity to their experience abroad. We also spent sun-filled days on the coast with my aunt and cousins at their beloved beach spot. We wrapped up our time in Paris, visiting my uncle, his partner, and their new baby, a tender, full-circle moment that made our time in the city feel even more meaningful.
Paris is endlessly inspiring for families; it’s a city layered with beauty, culture, and playful surprise. There’s a richness in its museums, parks, cinemas, and shops, but what really stands out are the seasonal experiences that appear almost like magic. One of our highlights was the whimsical fair that appeared in the Jardin des Tuileries, just a short distance from where we were staying. The children were enchanted: Paris invites discovery at every turn, no matter your age.
Staying with onefinestay offers the kind of experience that transforms a visit into a journey deeply lived. It allows you to settle into the rhythm of a neighborhood, frequent local markets, find your favorite morning café, and feel, even temporarily, like a part of the fabric of the city. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s an invitation to belong.
The most helpful thing we’ve learned over the years is to build in more space than you’d think: more rest, more unstructured time, more gentle pauses between activities. If you can, stay an extra day or two in each place to really settle. Children (and parents!) are so much happier when they’re rested and well-fed. Parks are essential, our children loved the one near the Eiffel Tower, and even something as simple as riding the Metro became a small adventure in itself.
I loved gathering around the banquette for breakfast; those slow, sweet morning moments felt extra special as it was there that we made plans for the day ahead. It was also where we gathered to host a meal with my uncle and his partner. The living space was perfect for playing with their baby and the kitchen became a favorite spot too, perfect for making coffee in the quiet hours before the city began to stir.
Everyone seemed to gravitate to the living room in the evenings; it became our sanctuary after full days out in the bustle of the city. We’d sit together in the evenings with the windows open, listening to the hum of the city as night settled in. There’s something so comforting about returning to a beautiful space that holds you as you unwind and share stories from the day.
The neighborhood in the 8th Arrondissement was quietly elegant, with a peaceful charm that made it feel like a retreat from the bustle of the city. We spent slow afternoons wandering through Parc Monceau and caught golden-hour light filtering through the Arc de Triomphe and Église de la Madeleine.
One culinary highlight was Ferona, a stunning Argentinian restaurant that we fell completely in love with. As a cook, herbalist, and author, I was particularly moved by their saffron-poached pears—an exquisite dish I’ll be dreaming of (and attempting to recreate!) for seasons to come.
The Jardin des Tuileries is an absolute must for families, and the Ferris wheel offers breathtaking views of the city from a height that’s thrilling for little ones and grown-ups alike. The garden features The Kiss by Rodin. There’s also a joy in wandering without too rigid a plan—letting the rhythm of the city guide you.
We revisited a few of our favorite places from past visits, but left room for serendipity. Some of the most memorable moments weren’t planned. Happening upon small street performances, a conversation with a market vendor, a barber shop for a back-to-school haircut, or the quiet awe of walking past centuries-old architecture bathed in afternoon light.
Next, we’re dreaming of Provence, drawn by the lavender fields, antique markets, and the warm, slow pulse of the countryside. We’re also hoping to visit Ireland, a place rich with family roots and ancestral stories we’re eager to explore more deeply.
