Q&A with Matthew Williamson - designer, creative tastemaker and onefinestay homeowner.

Meet Matthew Williamson, a renowned fashion designer turned interior design tastemaker, who divides his time between London and Mallorca and rents his vibrant Belsize Park Gardens home with onefinestay while he’s away.

Tell us about your creative journey.

I started my career in fashion in the late 1990s and spent around 20 years building my womenswear brand. I loved connecting with people, creating collections and designing the runway shows, but over time, I was drawn to interiors.

How would you describe your aesthetic?

I’m drawn to saturated colours, bold patterns and textural layers - I love to mix warm and cool tones, while saving bright pops of colour for smaller accents. For me, pattern is poetry and brings a space to life.

Tell us about your London home.

When guests step into this home, I want them to feel calm, at peace, but to also experience the ‘wow’ factor. The space has great bones with a central barrel-shaped room, high ceilings, architrave and big windows with natural light. To highlight these features, I introduced two main colours - neutral pink and honey mustard. At night, the room lights up, and it feels magical.

Why is travel important to you?

I split my time between London and Mallorca. I tend to design by looking at what’s around me, so in Spain I’m painting in my studio and finding inspiration in the outside world most days, whereas London has a faster pace of life and it’s where I come to focus on work.

What do you look for in a space when you travel?

Interiors play a big part in making someone’s time feel more special. I really appreciate the small details, be that a carafe of water by the bath, fresh towels on the bed, a onefinestay welcome kit.
