Mas des Baux is perhaps one of the most incredible villas you'll ever stay in. This extraordinary five-bedroom villa has parts dating back to Roman times and a remarkable interior that has been hewn out of the cliff-face itself. The villa is set into the rock beneath the ruins of Château des Baux-de-Provence, and the natural cooling properties of the rock mean that there’s no need for modern AC even in the hottest summer.

This region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is famous for its food and wine, and a stay at this astonishing accommodation puts you just a four-minute drive from one of the finest French restaurants in the world, the Michelin-starred 'L'Oustau de Baumanière' in Les Baux-de-Provence. After a memorable meal, you can indulge your sweet tooth with a visit to the Baumanière chocolate factory or take a wine tour at one of the local vineyards. Keep checking for the many festivals and art events that take place, particularly during the summer. There is nothing quite like a concert at the magnificent Roman amphitheatre in Orange.

Mas des Baux is genuinely incredible. How many other villas have living spaces where the walls are the living rock of the cliff itself? Everywhere you look, there are one-off features, including some that date back to the Roman period. Bedrooms have hewn rock walls, creating a secure and cosy feeling without the constant hum of air conditioning in the background. The kitchen has massive stone lintels and exposed stone walls, balanced with state-of-the-art appliances. The ensuite bathrooms capture that Roman experience with tiling and flagstone floors.

The villa’s bedrooms are spread across the main Mas and the annexe. At the garden level are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with a queen-size bed. On the first floor is the enchanting master bedroom, with a queen-size bed, stone fireplace and private terrace. The annexe’s two bedrooms consist of two queen-size beds that share a bathroom. Every single bedroom is packed full of character, with no compromise on comfort.

Outside, the two terraces offer uninterrupted views of the countryside. A swimming pool invites you to cool off during the hot summer afternoons. Afterwards, laze in the hammock and have a little snooze in the sunshine. An outdoor summer kitchen and al fresco dining area are perfect for entertaining.
