Meet the Homeowner - Matthew Williamson

Tell us about your creative journey.

I started my career in fashion in the late 1990s and spent around 20 years building my womenswear brand. I loved connecting with people, creating collections and designing the runway shows, but over time, I was drawn to interiors.

What do you look for in a space when you travel?

Interiors play a big part in making someone’s time feel more special. I really appreciate the small details, be that a carafe of water by the bath, fresh towels on the bed, a onefinestay welcome kit. 

What do you value most about onefinestay's service?

Often when we come home, the team asks us if we’d like the home to be set up in ‘guest mode’ - I always say yes, and it’s like returning to a luxury hotel. No detail is ever forgotten. 
 

If you had to name one restaurant that captures the city’s spirit right now, which would it be?

It’s impossible to name just one because the city holds so much variety. However, I always return to Blue Ribbon for consistently good and unfussy sushi. The Waverly Inn captures timeless, old New York and for the best down-town people-watching, head to Bar Pitti. You can’t miss Altro Paradiso, which is next to my home - their grilled branzino and fennel salad is unmatched. 

For those lucky enough to spend time here, what’s your one “secret” to living well in New York?

The real secret to living well in New York is finding your rhythm within the chaos. Let yourself experience the city fully. Walk everywhere, feel its energy, take in the madness - but also know when to step back into pockets of peace.
