Ideal for groups of friends seeking a luxurious base, Casa Alang Alang typifies Steve Adams’s award-winning work. The late Californian architect is renowned for homes whose indoor and outdoor boundaries are blurred. Cascading downhill, with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and sandy Playa Grande, this stone-built villa decidedly fits that description.

The glass sides of its living area, for instance, can be fully retracted or closed off. An ironwood dining table and comfortable sofa await, as do a nearby gym and ping-pong table. If al fresco days are in order – and they usually are – palm trees ring various decks, a thatched gazebo and two infinity pools (one integrating a hot tub) ensuring that everyone has space. The main terrace is fantastic for meals or cocktails over a tropical sunset.

Everywhere inside is ultra-spacious, including the bright bedrooms. These are ensuite and mostly afford outside access; one features an additional kitchenette. Alongside two housekeepers, a concierge can take care of grocery shopping, buffet breakfast preparation – starring that famous Costa Rican coffee – and any other meals you want to be provided (food costs extra). An all-natural anti-mosquito system has been installed, as has an eco-friendly system providing still and sparkling water on tap.

Tamarindo’s attractive centre is just a five-minute stroll. Playa Grande itself is great for surfing or seeing nesting leatherback turtles (October to February). For beautiful white-sand beaches, visit the close-by resort area of Playa Langosta.
