For nature lovers, whale watching is a popular pastime in this part of the world, as the coastline sits on the migratory paths of humpback whales. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to spot them from the sun terrace of your villa rental. They pass by from December through to the early spring. Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s top diving locations, so divers are guaranteed clear waters and incredible sites to explore. Meanwhile, back on land, golf aficionados are spoilt for choice with five courses to choose from.
- Stroll through the Zona Romantica - this charming neighbourhood is packed with trendy art galleries and excellent eateries.
- Mexican food is so much more than just tacos and the best way to learn more about the local cuisine is to join one of the many food tours available throughout the city.
- Walk along the Malecon, a stretching oceanfront promenade filled with shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as street performances and art installations.
Our insider tips for Puerto Vallarta
Popular destinations in Puerto Vallarta
Lower Conchas Chinas, tranquillity personified
Conchas Chinas is a series of small beaches that merge to create a unique ecosystem. The beaches have been developed sympathetically to preserve their natural beauty. Lower Conchas Chinas is one of the more secluded areas, offering visitors a chance to escape to their own little piece of beachfront heaven. The waters are calm and perfect for snorkelling and swimming, and Lower Conchas Chinas is a very family-friendly beach. Nearby restaurants serve authentic Mexican dishes, making this the ideal spot for a lazy day in the sun, followed by an al fresco meal under the stars.
Mismaloya, where jungle meets the sea
The name Mismaloya comes from a local dialect and means ‘the place where you can catch fish with your hands’. This tropical beach has been a major fishing spot for centuries, and today the local boats still ply their trade offshore to supply the town’s restaurants with the freshest fish and shellfish. It’s only small, but this beautiful beach and its charming little town have plenty of personality. Used as a backdrop for the famous film, ‘Night of the Iguana’, the beach today is a sandy oasis lapped by azure water and fringed by palm trees.
“What I love about Puerto Vallarta is the delightful fusion of cosmopolitan and traditional, add in the shimmering waters of the Pacific Ocean and endless beautiful beaches and you have the perfect recipe for a truly special destination.”

Best time to go
During spring: early spring in Puerto Vallarta brings warm days and cool evenings, and a feeling of peace and quiet that makes it the ideal time of year to explore the jungle trails and archaeological sites that pepper this landscape. The temperature hovers around the high 20s°C (85°F), and by May it’s warming up with the occasional spring shower to freshen the air. The beaches are quiet and peaceful and the water is warm for swimming.
During summer: the lush jungle that surrounds Puerto Vallarta is an indicator of the higher rainfall in the summer months, which swells the rivers and makes the local waterfalls even more spectacular. This is the time when you’ll also see turtles heading towards the beaches to lay their eggs. It’s a great opportunity to get involved in local conservation projects to protect these magnificent creatures.
During autumn: October sees the last of the rains ease and the sunshine warms the sand on the beaches. Look out for the Puerto Vallarta International Gourmet Festival in November, and the Day of the Dead celebrations during the last week of October.
During winter: one of the most pleasant times to visit the region, winter brings cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and sunny days. It also sees the return of humpback whales and whale sharks on their annual migration. These gentle giants swim sedately past the coastline, and local tours take visitors out to interact with them without causing them any harm or distress.
How to get there
