Villa Bougainvillea I is the most romantic option around Koh Samui’s gated Miskawaan estate – a boutique beachside collection on the north coast. Secluded on the enclave’s fringes, it provides couples with a tremendous master bedroom suite in its own pavilion at the rear. Accompanying that are a huge bathroom, an exotic outdoor shower and a jacuzzi bathtub.

If needed, three other spacious, teak-floored ensuite bedrooms (two of them twins) – each also boasting cheerful Jim Thompson fabrics and classy print wallpapers by French brand Élitis – convene in another pavilion; across a tropical garden and ornamental pond is a third building housing a dining area and a lounge whose TV has Netflix. Accompanying the villa is a dedicated private chef cooking meals on request.

Just beyond begins your long, blue-tiled pool, containing chlorinated saltwater, with two sun loungers and drooping palms providing some shade. Next to it are al fresco lounge terraces and, amid Bougainvillea’s open-sided gazebo, a dining table and a two-person daybed. Across a small lawn, a gate opens onto Miskawaan’s idyllic yellow-sand beach.

Kayaks are available for use here, a taster of the numerous activities this estate can arrange for its guests. Those range from yoga sessions, massages and Thai cookery lessons on site to street-food tours, speedboat excursions to snorkel in marine parks and chauffeured excursions to elephant sanctuaries or waterfall hikes. Most tempting for couples, however, will surely be the private picnics on uninhabited islands.
