Classic holiday traditions in Hollywood: 4 events you don't want to miss

With countless rows of palm trees and the undulating shores of the Pacific Ocean just a short ride away, you’d be forgiven for thinking of Hollywood as a strict summer destination. There’s no denying that the warmer months are perfect for strolling down the streets of this iconic Los Angeles neighbourhood on the lookout for all its famous landmarks, but the festive season offers just as much to experience - if not a little more.

From Christmas parades and light festivals to spectacular Broadway shows, there’s a whole host of magical events and attractions to discover in West Hollywood and beyond. Let us share with you our picks of the best Christmas and holiday events in Hollywood to attend this year.

Experience the enchanting Hollywood Christmas Parade

A beloved holiday tradition dating back over nine decades, the Hollywood Christmas Parade never fails to get its attendees in the festive spirit with dazzling floats, marching bands and celebrity appearances. This fun-filled event was the original inspiration for the classic ‘Here Comes Santa Claus’ song back in 1946, and will be celebrating its 93rd year. Most importantly, the parade focuses on giving back to the community.

The parade starts at Hollywood Boulevard, just outside the Roosevelt Hotel before winding around Vine Street and along Sunset Boulevard. If this is your first time visiting Los Angeles, you’ll also get to tick these two important boulevards off; both of which are renowned for their significance in the city’s longstanding movie history.

Indulge in festive goodies at the Holidays on the Hill festival

Dusted in faux snow and with the scent of sweet yuletide treats in the air, you’ll get to experience all the delights of a traditional winter market right in the heart of Tinsel Town. Taking place throughout December at The Hill in Universal City, there are plenty of opportunities to stop by and enjoy the festivities of this fun outdoor event.

For little guests, there are carnival games, craft workshops, and a chance to meet Father Christmas himself at Santa’s Workshop. Meanwhile, the adults in the group can take part in wine tastings at The Hill’s Jingle Bell Tavern while enjoying live performances from talented local acts.

Take a train ride through the Holiday Light Festival in Griffith Park

Spanning over 4,000 acres, Griffith Park is far more than a humble green space. Home to the Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles Zoo, and the instantly recognisable Hollywood sign - this park offers a full day out for visitors. The Holiday Light Festival in Griffith Park marks the start of the holiday season in Hollywood.

You can walk or cycle through the thousands of glowing lights, but one of the loveliest ways to make the most of the sights is from a miniature train ride. Taking you on a one-mile loop, you can soak up the sparkling sights while sipping on a cup of hot cocoa from the nearby Griffith Park Cafe.

Watch the hit musical ‘Wicked’ on Broadway this Christmas

Across the pond in Britain, pantomimes are a Christmas classic - but you can take it up a notch in Los Angeles with a hit Broadway show at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. Nestled along Hollywood Boulevard, this historic art-deco movie palace is host to the biggest Broadway plays.

This Christmas sees the return of Wicked after a nine-year hiatus from Los Angeles. With over 100 international awards across a 20-year run, eager fans have been anticipating the musical’s return for almost a decade, so tickets are expected to fly out once they’re released later in the year.
