Our Costa Del Sol travel guide reveals all there is to know about this glorious destination.

Adventure, culture and relaxation aplenty

Costa del Sol’s beautiful coastline bursts with plenty of opportunities for adventure, culture and relaxation, depending on what you fancy. A key part of Costa del Sol’s charm is the region’s ability to cater to every kind of taste and interest - every inch of the area is ripe for exploring, boasting its own unique offering.

Explore the Sierra Nevada mountain range

Active types will enjoy getting out into nature, whether by land or sea. There are endless hiking and biking trails intersecting the local countryside and the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range is right on your doorstep - you can even go skiing here in the winter. Thanks to the influence of the British Royal Family, who used to holiday in the region in the 1920s, Costa del Sol is also known as the best golfing region in the whole of Spain. The area now boasts a staggering 70 golf courses - the highest concentration anywhere in Europe - pure heaven for golf aficionados.

Golf to your heart’s content

Thanks to the influence of the British Royal Family, who used to holiday in the region in the 1920s, Costa del Sol is also known as the best golfing region in the whole of Spain. The area now boasts a staggering 70 golf courses - the highest concentration anywhere in Europe - pure heaven for golf aficionados. From Los Naranjos to the Santa Maria Gold Club, there are almost too many award-winning courses to choose from.

Charter a private yacht

For those craving to get out on the water, chartering a private yacht for the day is a great way to explore the rugged coastline’s hidden coves and secret beaches. The warm water temperatures also make the region ideal for anyone who’d like to try their hand at surfing, kayaking or paddleboarding. The Costa Del Sol is also home to the only sea grotto in Europe, which can be found in Rincón de la Victoria - a municipality that boasts over nine miles of sandy beaches.

Immerse yourself in the rich history of the region

Meanwhile, history buffs may want to head a little further inland to the ancient mountaintop city of Ronda and the world-famous Alhambra palace in Granada. Boasting beautiful architecture, spectacular views and a rich tapestry of history, a day trip to each of these sites should be on the cards for anyone who wants to delve into the region’s fascinating past.

Discover Costa Del Sol’s beautiful towns and villages

Meanwhile, culture lovers will certainly want to pay a visit to some of the region’s beautiful towns and cities. Indulge in a spot of shopping at the high-end boutiques of Puerto Banús in Marbella, before taking a wander along the bustling waterfront, stopping for a coffee or something stronger in one of the harbourside bars. Or, tuck into a tasty paella at the lovely Orange Square in Marbella’s Old Town, renowned for its luscious orange trees that shade diners from the beating afternoon sun. Head further into the heart of Costa Del Sol and you’ll discover the charms of Mijas Pueblo, a beautiful and peaceful village nestled into the mountainside. Or, if you are finding it hard to tear yourself from the mesmerising sights of the coast, the quaint fishing village of Castillo de la Duquesa is well worth a visit.

Our Costa Del Sol travel guide to blissful beaches

Following the Meditteranean Sea from Gibraltar all the way to Granada, every inch of Costa del Sol is pure bliss for beach lovers. As well as miles and miles of beautiful beaches, the region’s coastline is also home to countless dolphins - keep an eye out for these friendly locals when you’re relaxing on the sand.

Maro Beach

If you’re seeking something a little more secluded, then Maro Beach nearby the charming cove town of Nerja is one of the region’s loveliest spots. Framed by rugged cliffs and azure ocean, this silky stretch of dark sand has a wild magic all of its own.

Guadalmina Beach

Guadalmina Beach in San Pedro de Alcántara is another excellent spot. Stretching out alongside Marbella’s first golf course, this stony beach is a little tricky to reach by car and therefore lacks the crowds of El Faro. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with a sweet sense of solitude and excellent views over Gibraltar and the Atlas Mountains towering on the Moroccon coastline. The beach is also home to endless hidden coves and the ruins of the Ciliana Roman baths.

El Faro Beach

One of our favourite spots for a sun-soaked afternoon is the famous El Faro Beach in Marbella. Nearby the city centre, this is an extremely accessible stretch of sand with plenty of amenities. It’s also just a five-minute walk from the city’s luxury boutiques, high-end restaurants and pretty terrace cafes - a fact which has made it particularly popular with both tourists and locals alike.

Our Costa Del Sol guide to fresh Andalucian flavour

Abounding in fresh produce and excellent wines, Andalucia certainly packs a punch when it comes to the food department - boasting a huge variety of bars and restaurants serving authentic Mediterranean food. From perfectly fried fish dishes to tasty tapas, there’s something for everyone.

Skina

Boasting not one but two Michelin stars, Skina in Marbella is one of the best spots to tuck into southern Spain’s gastronomy. Serving up exquisitely beautiful dishes in a cosy yet chic hideaway in the centre of the city, this is one of the best foodie spots in the whole of the Costa del Sol.

Breathe

Another gorgeous gourmet spot in Marbella is the restaurant and garden at Breathe, a tranquil refuge offering beautiful and healthy food in leafy surrounds. Once you’ve eaten your fill, head upstairs to Air, the panoramic rooftop bar, for some expertly crafted cocktails and spectacular views over the glittering city lights and the towering La Concha mountain beyond.

Alexso Restaurant

The bustling city of Malaga is not without its gastronomic delights either - top of our list being the wonderful Alexso Restaurant. The menu here bursts with innovative flavour, while keeping things strictly local and homemade - here, only the best quality ingredients from the market make it onto your plate. What’s more, the setting manages to be both refined yet laidback, the dishes beautifully presented and the service genuinely friendly - a true delight for all the senses.
