From buddhas to beaches

One of the most famous is The Big Buddha, a huge 45-metre-tall Buddha statue towering above the trees in Nakkerd Hill. Covered in brilliant white Burmese marble, this impressive symbol of peace has become quite the icon. Visitors can take the trek up to see the statue in all its glory, with the gentle tinkle of bells and the low hum of dharma music to set the scene.

Take a stroll through the streets of Phuket

While you’re in the city, be sure to take a wander down the streets of Old Phuket Town. Its colourful shop fronts have been impeccably preserved in their Sino-colonial architectural style, offering a glimpse of what life was like on the island in the late 19th century. With everything from artisanal ice cream to independent coffee shops, there’s plenty to keep you busy here.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Phuket’s lively atmosphere is by visiting the Sunday Walking Street Market. To avoid everyone wandering around in the midday heat, most of the island’s markets don’t get started until the sun has gone down. Hosted every Sunday, this particular market gives you the chance to pick up some local crafts and secondhand goods - from clothing to traditional street food.
