Framed by the emerald green waters of the Andaman Sea, Phuket is an idyllic island characterised by its tropical beaches, lush rainforests, and bustling local towns. The attractions here are wonderfully unique and varied - it’s not every day you get to spend your afternoon basking in the sunshine with elephants before heading into the city for a taste of Phuket’s world-renowned nightlife.

Adventure seekers will find plenty to discover amid the lush greenery of the Kathu and Phanom districts. Hidden among their dense foliage are a series of magnificent waterfalls, accessed by scenic hiking trails that guide you far off the beaten track - guaranteed to satisfy your inner explorer. Foodies, on the other hand, will delight in the streets of Phuket City - lined with a dizzying array of stalls and eateries, each with their own unique spin on classic Thai cuisine. Whatever your tastes and interests, Phuket is sure to satisfy.

From buddhas to beaches

Steeped in natural beauty and rich in history, the lush landscape of Phuket holds many interesting attractions. One of the most famous is The Big Buddha, a huge 45-metre-tall Buddha statue towering above the trees in Nakkerd Hill. Covered in brilliant white Burmese marble, this impressive symbol of peace has become quite the icon. Visitors can take the trek up to see the statue in all its glory, with the gentle tinkle of bells and the low hum of dharma music to set the scene.

Bordering on the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park, the Phuket Elephant Sanctuary is another attraction that draws crowds at all times of the year. A dedicated rehabilitation centre for sick, injured, and elderly elephants, profits from visitors help to provide ongoing veterinary care and food for these beautiful creatures. Book an afternoon session and you’ll get the opportunity to feed the elephants before they head over to their cosy night shelters.

Relaxing beach days are best spent on Kata Beach, set within the Mueang Phuket District. Less than a mile long, yet still considered to be one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, its crystalline waters and soft sands provide the perfect setting for a day of bathing and swimming.

Last but not least, a visit to Promthep Cape should definitely be on your must-see list. Easily one of the most photographed locations on the whole island, this scenic cape attracts an array of visitors in the early evening hours - all waiting for the sun to descend and set the sky alight with shades of pink, purple, and orange.

Take a stroll through the streets of Phuket

While you’re in the city, be sure to take a wander down the streets of Old Phuket Town. Its colourful shop fronts have been impeccably preserved in their Sino-colonial architectural style, offering a glimpse of what life was like on the island in the late 19th century. With everything from artisanal ice cream to independent coffee shops, there’s plenty to keep you busy here.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in Phuket’s lively atmosphere is by visiting the Sunday Walking Street Market. To avoid everyone wandering around in the midday heat, most of the island’s markets don’t get started until the sun has gone down. Hosted every Sunday, this particular market gives you the chance to pick up some local crafts and secondhand goods - from clothing to traditional street food.
