Architect Alex Michaelis brings a playful spirit to modern design at Blythe Road, his imaginative family home in West London. Set within a former car garage, the residence pairs sweeping curves and vibrant color with sculptural details and unexpected touches. The result is a sophisticated yet inviting home designed for both everyday life and joyful discovery.
Architect Alex Michaelis has little interest in the idea that beautiful homes should feel precious. The Soho Farmhouse designer's West London residence—a former car garage transformed into a curvilinear family retreat—embraces a playful vision of luxury, where Le Corbusian modernism meets the realities of everyday life. At Blythe Road, softly rounded walls flow from room to room and a fireman's pole and Corian slide are treated with the same design rigor as custom oak tables and collectible artwork.
"The children use the fireman's pole to come down from their bedrooms," Michaelis says.
Throughout, that irreverent spirit is balanced with restrained furnishings, tactile materials, and sculptural forms to create what the architect describes as a sense of "space, calmness, and light." It's sophistication that doesn't take itself too seriously—an urban family home designed as much for living as for looking.
