The creative minds behind the celebrated design firm, Studio McGee, Shea and Syd McGee are experts in interiors. We were therefore delighted that they chose two onefinestay homes to stay in on their family trip to London and Paris. Shea and Syd visited these iconic world capitals with their three young girls. Here are some details about their family adventure, as well as some exclusive design tips from Shea.

London

“I will be reminiscing about this trip until I’m 100 years old — from the moment walked through the door, we were greeted with warmth and the feeling of home. onefinestay made it possible for our family of five to spread out and have our own space as well as areas for us to gather. Their concierge service was so helpful and made everything easy! Mornings were spent around the table with local pastries followed by adventures throughout the city. One of the highlights of our trip was our evening strolls at sunset taking in the charming neighborhood.”

Paris

“Our time in Paris was an absolute dream. We spent our days exploring with many stops at the parks and carousels throughout the city! As a family with three young kids one of the best parts of the experience was shopping at local markets, grabbing a fresh baguette each night, and making dinner together in our onefinestay apartment. As a designer, I loved being able to experience Paris in a home with beautiful historical details and endless inspiration.”

London Design Tips

- Don't be afraid to incorporate moody colours even in small spaces.

- Classic materials like marble are classic for a reason – they age well and don't appear dated over time.

- Streamlined touches like steel doors provide great juxtaposition with more traditional furniture selections.

- Wallpaper all walls rather than only an accent to create an immersive experience.

- Pay attention to the in-between moments like stairwells.

Paris Design Tips

- Juxtapose a few modern pieces against historical architecture to create contrast in your designs.

- Chevron wood floors will always be a beautiful choice.

- Moulding adds interest and character to a long blank wall even without the addition of artwork.

- Stained wood accents provide a feeling of warmth in homes with primarily white or light walls.

- A TV nook called a snug between two rooms provides a cosy retreat that can be either closed off or opened for more connection to the spaces around it.
