For those planning a family trip in the near future, here are Lovevery's top tips for travelling with the little ones!

Tips for travelling with young children, from Lovevery co-founder, CEO, and mum of three, Jessica Rolph

As a parent who has done a lot of travelling with three kids, I know how challenging it can be to keep young children entertained on a plane, in the car, and away from home. But in committing to going as tech-free as possible, our family finds that travel is a chance for intimate family connection—something that is way too rare in our busy lives. Here are a few ways our family has found to foster that connection as well as a few tips for keeping little ones entertained during the journey.

Build connection

Try not to worry about the trip going exactly as planned - because odds are, it may not. Instead, use the time to be present with your family and feel confident in knowing that you are creating meaningful memories with your children in your time together.

Take the time to slow down, whether that is putting the phone away or joining in playtime. Children recognise when you are present with them and feel your special bond.

“Unless they’re fast asleep, travelling with young children can be challenging, even in the best of times. As toddlers approach age 3, they’re in the early stages of being able to play some classic (and new) games to make the car or plane ride a bit more entertaining. Here are a few fun options for children–and parents alike. ”

Get playful

Unless they’re fast asleep, travelling with young children can be challenging, even in the best of times. As toddlers approach age 3, they’re in the early stages of being able to play some classic (and new) games to make the car or plane ride a bit more entertaining. Here are a few fun options for children–and parents alike!

  • Dot sticker activity: Dot stickers are simple and fun and great for developing fine motor skills. They’re also inexpensive and easy for your toddler to peel off of a sheet or roll. Play “name the dots” by sticking the dots on different parts of your child’s body and your own, asking “Where is your nose, elbow, or arm?” Or, try dot hide-and-seek by sticking a dot on yourself without your child seeing (on an elbow or knee, for example) and then encourage them to find it.

  • Sausage: In the game of Sausage, people take turns asking someone a question—and they’re only allowed to say “sausage” in reply. Tell them to try not to laugh or even smile (though they probably won’t be able to avoid it!) For example, you ask your child, “What did you brush your teeth with this morning?” and they have to say “sausage!” You can substitute it for any funny-sounding word or phrase: peanut butter, underwear, pancakes.

  • Favourites: Ask your child (and anyone else around) their favourite colour, ice cream, toy, animal, etc. Be sure to offer your own and try asking “why?” after they’ve named it. Model your own answers: “my favourite animal is a dog because they’re cuddly and cute. This activity can occupy a good amount of time if you have a lot of broad categories in mind. It’s also a great way to learn more about each other as a family.

Pack smart

Packing for young children can feel overwhelming. When it comes to playthings, think about open-ended items that can have multiple options for entertainment. Portable, multi-purpose playthings that can be easily stashed in a carry-on, and do double (or triple) duty as a game, a puzzle, and inspiration for imaginative play.

We try not to use too many screens with our kids, so we opt for bringing books and play activities like colouring, card games, origami, and stickers. My kids also enjoy audio books – and lots (and lots) of snacks
