Beaches, boutiques and the balmy summer breeze: our Hamptons travel guide
Boasting some of the world’s best stretches of sand, the Hamptons is a paradise for beachgoers, water babies and nature lovers of all kinds. Whether you’re dreaming of long windswept wanders with the sand between your toes, lazy afternoons spent soaking up the sun or thrilling days out catching the waves, the Hamptons boasts endless opportunities for you to get your fix of Vitamin Sea.
On the list of ‘fun things to do in the Hamptons’ going to the beach has to be number one. The beaches are the real beating heart of this exclusive vacation spot. It’s here where you’ll find gatherings of the season’s most glamorous guests, as well as some of the region’s best restaurants and bars. Those seeking serenity and solace will also be able to find these along Long Island’s stretching shores - the beaches here are incredibly diverse, catering to all tastes and moods. Here are five of our favourite local beaches, guaranteed to give you yet another reason to visit the Hamptons this summer.
One of the most famous of the Hamptons’ beaches (and rated as one of the best beaches in the whole of the US), a trip to Cooper’s Beach should be top of your list. Backed by beautiful sand dunes and magnificent mansions, the beach spans three and a half kilometres, meaning there’s plenty of space for everyone to spread out. One of the Hamptons’ main beaches for surfing, this is a great spot for catching waves or sitting back and watching the pros zipping along the water. Located in mellow Southampton, Cooper’s Beach is far from the bustle of most Hamptons towns and a stone’s throw away from many other beaches and golf clubs.
Ditch Plains Beach is conveniently located right in the heart of the village of Montauk, near numerous parks, golf courses and attractions. If you want to visit a Hamptons beach that's known for its mellow vibe and stunning scenery (not to mention excellent surf) Ditch Plains checks all the above boxes. With seasonal lifeguards, this is a great spot for surfers, swimmers and paddle boarders alike.
You could spend a whole Hamptons’ summer season relaxing on the silky shores of Georgica Beach - a stunning 90-metre open stretch of fine golden sand and crashing waves, framed by a backdrop of beautiful East Hampton mansions. The road to Georgica Beach takes you past some of East Hampton's finest homes, including an abundance of historical waterfront mansions - perfect for any design lovers in the group.
Often referred to as a hidden gem by locals, Haven’s Beach is a picturesque, family-friendly beach located in the charming Sag Harbor village. Boasting an enchanting view of Shelter Island in the distance, this is the ideal place to sit back, relax and watch the sailing boats scud by. With gentle waters and a playground on-site to explore, the little ones are sure to love this special spot too. What’s more, being just steps away from Main Street, you’re never far away from some of the Hamptons’ best restaurants and bars - perfect for an après beach pick-me-up or a laidback lunch.
Located at the end of Two Mile Hollow Road in East Hampton Village, Two Mile Hollow Beach is well worth a visit during your trip to the Hamptons. Known for its ideal swimming conditions and great views along the fine sandy shoreline, it typically sees fewer visitors during off-season months - though expect things to liven up once summer rolls around.
It’s good to note that many of the beaches in the Hamptons charge a non-resident day fee to visitors. Some of these permits have to be obtained in advance, while others can be purchased onsite. Procedures can vary from beach to beach, and rules regarding pets, facilities and parking costs etc. can change depending on the local township, so advanced planning is crucial to make the most out of your Hamptons getaway.
