The Hamptons offers far more than just spectacular scenery and a welcome, quieter pace of life from the city. Dotted along Long Island’s North Fork are an impressive collection of vineyards and wineries - over 60, in fact - producing exquisite wines to suit all preferences.
Whether you’re partial to the bold, rich aromas of a good red or prefer the lighter notes of a fruity rosé, you’re bound to find a new favourite after sampling the wares on a tasting room tour.
What better to pair those long summer evenings by the coast than with a chilled glass of vino in hand? If you’re planning a visit to one of the region’s vineyards on your next break, here are five of the very best Hamptons wineries offering tasting sessions and tours.
What was gravelly farmland in 1983 has been transformed into a verdant vineyard among the lush greenery of Northville in Suffolk County. Easily found along Sound Avenue - one of the two major roads through Long Island’s North Fork - Palmer Vineyards offers daily wine and cheese pairings, where visitors can kick things off with a toast of Blanc de Blanc before moving on to sample four of the vineyard’s wines, each paired with an artisanal cheese.
If you’re planning something a little extra special, there’s always the option of a private booth for a VIP Tasting Flight package; perfect for getting the whole group together for an afternoon of tasty food and delicious wines, straight from the source.
Set just off the Montauk Highway in the village of Sagaponack, the Wölffer Estate Vineyard has been producing quality wines, spirits, and ciders since 1988. At its helm is resident winemaker, Roman Roth, whose meticulous work has landed the winery an impressive number of awards across its extensive collection of wines.
Deeply rooted in sustainability and responsible harvesting, the estate grapes are grown with as few chemicals and fertilisers as possible. Open daily, The Tasting Room allows visitors to try these award-winning wines in a tranquil setting overlooking the vineyard. Here, you’ll have the chance to sip on the winery's most renowned varieties while tucking into tasty small bites or a charcuterie platter.
Cooled by the crisp breezes of the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyards of Channing Daughters Winery are home to a unique selection of over two dozen grape varieties. The only winery on the East End of Long Island, you’ll find all the classic European favourites here - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon to name just a few - all carefully cultured in more than 100 acres of lush land in the idyllic surroundings of Bridgehampton.
If you’re just passing by, you can stop by the onsite store to pick up a couple of bottles, or, if you have a little more time on your hands, spend the afternoon enjoying a picnic-style tasting experience on the vineyard’s patio.
Arguably one of the top wine producers on the whole of Long Island, Duck Walk Vineyards has been a much-loved and family-owned winery since 1994. From their Vidal Ice Wine made from grapes purposely frozen on the vine to fruity infusions crafted with wild Maine blueberries, you’ll find a whole host of inventive creations on offer here.
Producing around 5,000 cases of award-winning wines every year, the winery operates from two separate vineyards - one on the North Fork, and their flagship location on the South Fork. Tasting sessions are available at both, with a laidback picnic-style vibe and live music in the summer months.
A family-owned vineyard in Riverhead, the team at RGNY prides itself on creating unique wines inspired by their Mexican heritage. An evolution of an existing venture, the first vines were planted by the Gonzales family in Mexico during the late nineties, and have gradually expanded their reach into New York and the verdant pastures of the Hamptons.
The winery offers an extensive selection of tours, ranging from the cosy Greenhouse Experience, the quintessential Winemaker’s Tour of the vast 205-acre property, and the RG Tasting Experience that allows you to try five of the winery’s finest wines.
