The swimming pool and large sun deck at Blackbeard’s Hideaway faces the smaller, lush isles of Little Thatch and Frenchman’s Cay, plus an expanse of aquamarine ocean. Yachts flutter by, and ferries chug towards Jost Van Dyke. It’s the sort of magnificent vista that easily facilitates contented daydream for hours. And, should the sea become too tempting to resist, a walking path winds downhill to a dock off which it’s easy to snorkel atop live reefs. Blissful beaches, such as the legendary Smuggler’s Cove, are also only a short drive away.

Back up at the villa, outdoor dining areas and manicured gardens offer similarly wondrous views, as does a high-ceilinged ‘great room’. This is the home’s focal place, an open-plan sprawl that encompasses a high-end kitchen, another dining table and the comfy lounge. Local stonework, in league with tradewind breezes entering through French doors, keeps everything (and everyone) cool.

Privately secluded to either side – rendering them perfect for pairs of couples – are two air-conditioned king bedrooms of equal size. Each has an outdoor shower and access to a shared balcony wrap-around veranda that contributes yet more stupendous vistas. Just like in the great room, soaring cathedral ceilings and dark-wood furniture create a classic Caribbean feel.

Book in advance, and groups of up to 22 may also rent nearby sister homes Gestalt and Steele Point for the ultimate retreat.

The house was lovely. House manager was very helpful. One air conditioner was not working correctly and he had it repaired very quickly.
