Now that’s a view! When splashing inside Carmana’s green-blue infinity pool (heated from October to March), bathers will feel like they can almost touch the Tyrrhenian Sea below. From a supple sun deck or during outdoor meals on the terrace, it gets even more magical: Positano’s red roofs beckon to the right, along that famous Amalfi Coastline, and glitzy Capri appears, mirage-like, out to sea. Blissful breezes ripple up the cliffside before sunsets lend everything a pink filter.

Ochre-coloured and creeper-clad, Carmana itself is also a visual feast. Inside, whitewashed walls emphasise space amid traditional terracotta tiles and arches. Its ground floor contains a stellar kitchen and the combined dining-and-living room, its sofa facing a Smart satellite TV. The queen-sized, air-conditioned bedrooms are spread across all three floors; four are ensuite and accompanied by sea-facing balconies, and three of that same quartet also throw in a Jacuzzi-style bathtub. A housekeeper visits every other day.

Scenic, snaking roads connect to Positano, plus Amalfi, Sorrento and hillside Ravello. Each has multicoloured buildings, cafe-covered streets, fine restaurants and a raffish air. Hydrofoil ferries make for Capri and Ischia from Positano’s port; equally, we can arrange for a private boat to sail you to quiet sandy beaches. Napaoli’s glorious pizza awaits to the north, as do – below their destroyer, Mount Vesuvius – the fascinating remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
