Built by a Scottish lord (hence the name), Villa Scotch on the Rocks is now owned by one of the Jamaican families behind Red Stripe beer – chilled bottles of which should prove handy. That’s because Scotchie, as the villa is known, is perfect for entertaining.

Two verandas flank it: a covered upper terrace perfect for dining or lazing, and then the lower deck around a fresh-water pool. Both have speakers and comfortable wicker furniture. Before clinking beers or sipping sunset cocktails there, you might first enjoy lunch on Scotchie’s scenic seaside deck, complete with a shower and a ladder into the crystal-clear sea for swims. Snorkelling and kayaking equipment is available, too.

The villa also boasts a tropical garden, full of quiet spots for exercise or meditation. Similarly spacious are its living and dining rooms. Spacious, and beautiful: crisp white walls, block colours and bright artworks define the interiors, as well as classy travertine or mahogany floors. Upstairs are four ensuite bedrooms with balconies; the secluded fifth is in an adjoining cottage. Each promises excellent air-conditioning and a plasma-screen TV.

For all these amenities, Scotchie’s always-gushing reviews chiefly eulogise its exceptional staff – including a chef who’ll concoct children’s meals or jerk chicken on demand and your butler, among whose many duties are making discounted reservations at the gym, spa or tennis courts of a five-star resort just up the beach.
