Sleeping up to 34 guests accross 15 ensuite bedrooms, Villa Mandarinas is essentially your very own boutique resort. Besides its heated swimming pool and accompanying hot tub is the main terrace, complete with a bar, pizza oven and full kitchen. The lounge below boasts a pool table, while steps lead through gardens to an artificial tidal rock pool, ingeniously built into rocks to enable salt-water swims. To one side is your own pier, ready for pre-arranged beach-hopping cruises or diving charters to the Los Arcos islands; behind is a fire pit perfect for stargazers.

Mandarinas is fully staffed – including a chef preparing three daily, pre-chosen meals and a bartender serving poolside cocktails – and located amid a gated estate just south of Mismaloya’s beach. Previously lauded by Architectural Digest magazine, its terraced hillside complex involves a main house and about half the bedrooms opposite. Throughout, clean contemporary lines are enlivened by vivid tropical colors and lots of wood. Equally eye-catching are the magical sea views – especially come sunset.

Yours won’t be the first glamorous group to descend on these parts. In 1963, John Huston’s Oscar-winning The Night of the Iguana was filmed in Mismaloya by the likes of Richard Burton (and soon-to-be-wife Elizabeth Taylor), Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner. Huston later bought a house here, and there’s a statue of him in Puerto Vallarta, nine miles away, alongside boutique-lined cobblestone streets, LGBT-friendly bars and the romantic malecón boardwalk.
