The petite infinity pool at Villa Upside is stunning. It initially seems suspended in air, as though bathers could just reach out and ripple the aquamarine bay below. Memorably facing uninhabited Île Frégate from a hilltop perch on prestigious Pointe Milou, the pool forms part of a wrap-around pale-teak deck, which incorporates private seating, a barbecue grill and a see-through balcony.

That deck leads into an open-plan living area which also looks seawards via glass doors and walls. Hanging lights, straight lines, white walls and colourful cushions conspire to create a clean, soothing feel. Neighbouring the plush sofas, widescreen TV and spacious dining table is the luxurious kitchen, complete with an espresso machine and island bar for casual, eat-when-you-want breakfasts.

Complete with a king bed and yet another stellar sea view, the master bedroom is also on this floor. Stairs lead down to two more chambers; ensuring Upside works for both groups of friends or a family, one has twin beds which can be joined together, and the other a queen-size double bed. All three have marbly ensuites. Another flight of stairs then descends to the parking area.

From there, it’s just a short drive to several small shopping plazas, bakeries and sandy Lorient beach, whose protected coral reef guarantees gentle swells. You’re also only a stroll away from the Christopher hotel’s restaurants and Sisley spa.
