The nearby town of Porto Ercole is a sleepy port that is actually an island connected to the mainland by a causeway. Its history reaches back to Roman times, and it has mythological connections with the Greek hero Heracles. Still an important fishing port, this well-preserved Medieval town has a small marina and a fleet of fishing boats that bring in the catch every day. You enter the town through its original city gates and into the pedestrian-only streets - look up and you'll see Rocca Spagnola, an impressive 16th-century fortress, towering above you. Wandering around Porto Ercole's cobbled alleyways and hilly roads, you'll find boutiques galore and authentic trattorias serving delicious, freshly cooked fish dishes and - of course - the town's own-recipe pizzas.

After a day exploring the town and the vast castles that dot the landscape, it's time to return to the quirky delights of Villa Arte. The main living room is serene and comfortable, inviting guests to relax with a glass of wine and discuss the artistic wonders of the estate. The kitchen is modern and sleek, while the al fresco dining space allows you to enjoy your meal under the stars, with spectacular coastal views as your backdrop. The six bedrooms all have double beds and ensuite bathrooms. Whereas the exterior is designed to entertain, amaze and amuse, the bedrooms are quiet oases of calm and tranquillity in soothing neutral tones enlivened with pops of colour from the bespoke artworks on the walls.

Outside, the private art collection leads you to explore the grounds, stopping you in your tracks with pieces that challenge you intellectually and culturally.
