This remodelled 1940s retreat has been one family’s home for almost thirty years. Packed with inspiring artifacts from around the world, it famously fills its visitors with restorative calm. And who couldn’t be set at ease here? The original bungalow has more than doubled in size over the years – now four bedrooms, relaxing rooms inside, and tropical outdoor spaces, mean there’s always a quiet spot. It is walking distance to the Strand and the beach beyond, you’ll soon adopt the epithet coined by friends and family: ‘the sanctuary’.

Your host knows many crafts, including interior design, sculpting, and cooking – for her two sons when they visit, or forty-strong parties. She hopes you’ll play a tune on the white upright piano, a relic from her childhood.

You’ll spot many touches from Indonesia, but this enlightened living is of the Manhattan Beach variety. The street is calm and quiet, and scented by huge eucalyptus trees. In fact, on your first approach you might think you’re arriving at a plantation home. Inside, original exposed-beam ceilings have survived the two-story development, and the colorful, granite-topped kitchen is well-accustomed to large groups. Twin rooms upstairs are fitted for youthful exuberance, the queen bedroom for a more airy repose, and in the divine master bedroom strike the singing bowl and take a glass of wine out to its private canopied patio.

    • This home has no air conditioning but fear not - there are plenty of windows to let in the cool sea air. We are also happy to provide a fan upon request.
    • The homeowner's housekeeper visits every Friday from 10am-4:30pm.
    • While babies in arm are welcome, this home does not accept children under 10.
    • There is no Satellite or Cable TV in the home, there is an Apple TV where you can access Netflix, Amazon Prime and other steaming services.
    • There are three parking spaces on the street outside this home.
    • This home is spread over multiple floors with no internal elevator.
    • This home has a minimum length of stay of thirty nights.
