Elevated just above Tamarindo’s toffee-coloured beach, and staring straight out to sea, Sunset House’s position aptly justifies its name. From this oh-so-tropical property, designed by award-winning US architect Steve Adams, you can watch as the Pacific Ocean turns a stupendous pink after each blissful day.

And you can watch this spectacle from numerous perches. From the four main bedrooms (the fifth is a cool bunk room for four kids) – each ensuite with a white-walled, Hamptons vibe. From the master suite’s exotic outdoor shower. From the infinity pool, or the sun loungers around it. From the various decks, or a thatched pavilion. Or from the open-plan, indoor/outdoor ‘great room’, whose living and dining areas neighbour a superb kitchen. It all adds up a sprawling, flexible base for families or congregations of friends.

A full-time housekeeper ensures the villa is kept clean and, if desired, a local chef can come to provide delicious meals, and do your shopping, for an additional cost. That might be while you’re down on Tamarindo’s lovely shore or visiting surrounding seasides. Just to the north, Playa Grande is great for surfing or seeing nesting leatherback turtles from October to February, while the southerly resort area of Playa Langosta delivers especially beautiful white-sand beaches.
