Located in the eight-hundred-year-old borgo (village) of the same name, the manor lies directly on the ancient Via Francigena: the medieval pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome - and you can almost hear the footsteps of thousands of pilgrims and adventurers who walked these stones before you. Back in the present century, the airport is only 90 minutes away and Florence can be reached in just over an hour. Siena is just 30 minutes away and a mere eight minutes will see you to the local town of Buonconvento. All around are a multitude of beautiful villages and renowned wineries including the much-revered wine capital of Montalcino.
The manor itself dates back to the fourteenth century and is owned by the former U.S. Ambassador to Italy. The home therefore combines the magical beauty of its long history with contemporary refinement and comfort. Magnificent old stone walls of sunset hues, sweeping wooden-beamed ceilings and glorious terracotta floors fill every room with splendour and serenity. And there are a lot of these glorious spaces to discover.
An incredible library, of soaring arches and rich woods, houses a wondrously comfortable reading area around a lovely fireplace, glowing ambient lighting and space for games. The gloriously graceful living room hosts a majestic stone fireplace and ornate metalwork chandelier with a Yamaha grand piano and elegant antique seating. A more informal setting is to be found in the state-of-the-art media room with large HD television and stunning surround sound music system.
The breathtaking formal dining room is straight from a tale of Perrault and could easily be mistaken for a ballroom. The walls and ceiling are painted in formal Sienese style providing an exquisite backdrop to the large banqueting tables which adjust to multiple configurations of up to forty four guests. A sublime, antique fireplace completes the splendour. A further 'family' dining room provides a more intimate setting for ten diners to share a fireside meal.
The capacious, state-of-the-art kitchen might be a place you never need to go - with a professional chef on hand to delight you with their talents - but you may well wish to as there are opportunities for gourmet cooking lessons. A magical, vaulted cantina contains a fully-stocked bar with a wine tasting room just next door.
The nine spectacular suites are all named after famous Italians throughout history and each captures the majesty and opulence their namesake inspires. All the suites have their own private sitting room, a delectable soaking tub and rain shower, a daily-stocked mini-bar, coffee maker and an iPod docking station with surround sound. Beyond this, each has its own personal charms and extra delights.
Just when you think Borgo Villa could not be more perfect, amongst the grounds awaits a capacious gym fitted with treadmills, elliptical machines, bench and free weights as well as a lavish massage chair. The incredible spa room has the feeling of a mermaid's cove with decadent tiling and serene, gentle light. Here there's a sauna, steam room, cold splash pool and hot tub as well as the chance to organise a massage or treatment. Outside you can play a game of basketball or tennis or even Bocce - a fantastic, ancient game which you can be taught on site.
Back by the manor itself, the spectacular cobbled courtyard - meeting point of the ages - is a wonderful space to sit back and watch the world go by with upholstered divans set against the courtyard walls. The enchanting al fresco dining terrace is a haven of opulence and elegance with a sunset view and grand, lantern-lit dining table.
The sublime, 60ft, oval swimming pool sparkles in the sunshine and, from its waters or upon a nearby lounger, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Montalcino and the valley beyond. Nearby is an outdoor bar with a thatched roof that nods to more tropical realms: an extra sip of splendour. All around you are sculpted grounds designed by the world-renowned landscape architect Peter Curzon. The rolling lawns and gently winding cobblestone paths will guide you through a wonderland of cypresses, lavender, jasmine, roses, lime trees and tinkling water features so that every sense is delighted and your whole being is utterly, and totally, under Villa Borgo’s historic spell.
